Choosing the Right Cure Light for Your Studio

A print can come off the build plate looking perfect and still be under-cured. The cure station is doing more work than most studios give it credit for.

Wavelength first, everything else second

Most jewelry casting resins are formulated around a 385–405nm band. A cure light outside that range — even a bright one — will cure inconsistently or not at all at the surface-to-core level that matters for a solid pour. Check the resin's data sheet, then check the light's actual output spectrum, not just its marketing wattage.

Coverage matters more than intensity

A single bright bulb creates hot spots and shadowed faces on anything that isn't flat. For cast jewelry patterns — rings, pendants, anything with geometry on multiple sides — a turntable or a multi-angle chamber gives far more even cure than a stronger light pointed from one direction. Uneven cure shows up later as inconsistent shrinkage, which is a clarity and dimensional-accuracy problem you won't catch until burnout.

Printer-bed settings don't transfer directly

Your printer's exposure settings are calibrated for thin layers cured against a build plate — not for post-processing a fully formed model in open air. Post-cure almost always needs longer exposure than a single layer, and the right duration depends on wall thickness as much as resin type. Start with the resin manufacturer's post-cure guidance and adjust from there rather than guessing.

A simple studio setup that works

For most solo and small-studio setups, a 360° rotating chamber with 405nm LEDs and a timer is enough — you don't need an industrial setup to get consistent results. What matters is consistency: the same cure time, the same distance from the light, every batch, so any variation you see in the finished piece is coming from the resin or the pour, not from an inconsistent cure step.
