Filigree and Fine Detail: Getting the Most Out of Ultra
Ultra is formulated for detail retention, but the resin only does half the job — the other half is how you set up the pour.
Detail is lost before the resin ever cures
The most common cause of soft filigree isn't the resin at all — it's air trapped in the fine channels of the model during the pour. On anything with tight negative space (interlocking scrollwork, narrow gallery wire, stone-set textures), trapped air reads exactly like a resolution problem even though the resin never had a chance to fill the detail in the first place.
Vacuum degas, don't just pour slowly
If you're not already degassing before pour, this is the single highest-leverage change you can make for fine work. A short vacuum cycle pulls entrained air out of the resin before it ever reaches the mold, rather than hoping it works its way out during cure. For filigree-heavy pieces, we'd rather see a properly degassed Standard pour than a rushed Ultra pour.
Temperature stability matters more at fine scale
Coarse geometry tolerates a few degrees of drift during cure. Fine filigree doesn't — uneven cure temperature across a detailed piece can cause micro-shrinkage that's invisible on a plain band but shows up as a slightly soft edge on a 0.3mm scroll. Keep your cure chamber temperature stable, not just within range.
What to expect from Ultra specifically
Ultra's slower cure window (8–10 hours) isn't slower for its own sake — it's giving fine detail more time to fully resolve before the resin sets. Rushing that window by bumping cure temperature to speed things up defeats the purpose of choosing Ultra in the first place.
